Abd Hammoud’s moment of justice


chibli_mallat_latif_rashid_dara_noureddineOn March 11 2009, Dr Lateef Rashid, Minister of Water, generously invited the Global Justice Project to dinner at his home with Judge Dara Nur al-Din, Minister of Justice. By coincidence, this was the day on which Abd Hammoud, a former resident of the house, was sentenced by the Iraq High Tribunal (which sentenced Saddam Hussein to death in 2006), to life imprisonment for the execution of 42 Baghdad merchants in the summer of 1992. Tariq Aziz, the former regime’s international visage, also received a 15 year sentence. The two half brothers of Saddam were sentenced to death, while the former Governor of the central bank was found not guilty.
